Thailand: A Country Of Old-World Charm And Modern Convenience

t is easy to see why Thailand is one of the places that every backpacker should include in their travel bucket list. Not only does the country offer a unique and colorful heritage, its vibrant nightlife, vast shopping complexes and awe-inspiring architectural designs make the perfect blend of old world charm and modern convenience.

Old World Charm

Royal Barges Museum. Visiting the country is never complete without visiting the Royal Barges Museum. Barges play an important role in the country's communication to the outside world as well as being the major mode of transportation even for the royal family. The Royal Barges are made by carving huge pieces of teak wood and gilded with gold. There are eight barges in the museum and each boat has its own name and history behind it.

Grand Palace. Perhaps the most famous landmark in the country, the Grand Palace has served as the official residence of the Thai King for close to 150 years. The Palace is composed of several buildings including the famous Wat Phra Kaew which houses the revered Emerald Buddha. As the complex is considered a sacred site, a strict dress code is implemented. Visitors must wear appropriate clothes; however one can rent some pieces of clothing near the entrance to cover up.

Kanchanaburi. Visiting the town of Kanchanaburi is a must for travelers that are interested in history. The town is home to WWII memorabilia and the famous Death Railway. Aside from war cemeteries, visitors can also visit famous caves, waterfalls, the 3 Pagoda Pass, temples as well as the Erawan National Park.

Modern Convenience

Bangkok Forensic Museum. For those who are tired of visiting temples and ancient grandeur of the past, then visiting something different like the Bangkok Forensic Museum will surely lift your spirits up. Located inside the Siriraj Hospital, the museum spans two separate buildings with six different themes. The most famous areas include the pathology, forensic and the anatomical ones which feature dissected body parts inside formaldehyde jars. Visiting the museum might not be for all travelers but is worth visiting for those who are looking for something unusual.

Sukhumvit Road. If you are tired from all the day tours and want something different then head over to Sukhumvit Road. The entire road hosts the finest bars and clubs in the city. Watch the sun set and have a romantic meal at the Octave Rooftop and Lounge which offers a 360-degree view of the city. If you want to party then try out the popular Narz night club. Dance to the tune of hip hop, house and trance complete with top-class DJs. For travelers who just want to unwind for the day, head over to the Iron Fairies, an iron-bar themed bar that also features a live jazz band.
